Diaspora Day of Service 2024
With Reconnect JA and the Global Jamaica Diaspora Youth Council (GJDYC)
On June 20th, 2024, Reconnect JA collaborated with the Global Jamaica Diaspora Youth Council (GJDYC) for the Diaspora Day of Service, following the 10th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference. Together, we organised a youth-led volunteering experience with Smilozone, a Jamaican waste management and recycling company dedicated to creating innovative solutions for environmental challenges.
We spent the day sorting glass recycling, much of which comes from Jamaica’s hotel industry. It was eye-opening to see the sheer volume of glass bottles generated due to tourism. Despite the intense sun and an unexpected downpour, we managed to sort over 20 barrels of glass bottles in just a few hours. The experience was both meaningful and enjoyable, underscoring the importance of collective action for a cleaner, healthier future.
